Single Lever Engine Control

Post by BruceW »

I'm looking at replacing my old two-lever Morse engine control unit with a single lever SeaStar Teleflex MT-3 CH5310P. The old one is pretty shabby looking and the levers, particularly the shifter, are hard to operate. I plan on new cables as well. The boat is a '95 28TE and the engine a Cummins M1 250hp.

Is there anyone out there who has made this change and can give me some advice? I've searched the archives and have found a few mentions, but would very much appreciate more detail.

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

I recently had to replace my OEM single lever FRT/N control. This was not a change from dual lever. I also replaced the cables (gear box and throttle) for the same reason as you: the control was hard to operate and rather shabby. The eventual difference in control was astonishing.
The old (and new) controller was an Ultraflex B65 Single Lever Control which I found "new and in box" on Ebay for $366.00 via MAREMOSSOFORZASETTE in Italy. (https://www.maremossoforzasette.it/). DHL cost of shipping was less than $50.00 and it arrived very quickly. The replacement Teleflex CX3300 cables were easy to install and are very smooth. I chose the Ultraflex because unlike many single levers it offers a simple neutral option to rev the engine without engaging gears.

I have since overhauled the old control and it now works perfectly. It's still shabby, but If you'd like to have it gratis I can USPS it to you. I think I've even got the installation manual but if not, it's online.

PM me if you're interested.

Thanks very much for the offer, but I think I'll have to go with a new one. In addition to getting the thing to actually work, I definitely need to spiff up the look of the helm in that area.

I haven't even looked at U-Flex controls! Since my OE was Morse I just went there for a replacement without even thinking about it. Hmm. Better have a look.

I've been very pleased with my Uflex. Great control, especially when backing in (single engine, currents, wind and tides notwithstanding)
