Winterizing the holding tank

Post by Alexdixon »

I had to have my 2001 Albin 28’ taken out of the water unexpectedly early this year, and unfortunately the holding tank didn’t get emptied, I’m thinking of pumping anti-freeze through the toilet into the holding compartment, does anyone see an issue with that? I live in CT and don’t expect the temperature to drop below 0 F

It depends on how much is already in it. On our trawler we use the head all winter assembly we work on projects. We flush with some antifreeze. Is you tank is not that full and we don't get a long period below freezing then adding antifreeze should work. Try and use the -100.

Gross as it may seem, if you don't have a long or overly bent hose between the tank and pump-out hole, you might try getting a seal onto your wet n dry vac and sucking out the tank contents. Follow up with a flush out then then add -100 antifreeze. A mask with Vicks on it might be advisable. Wear long rubber gloves.
