Fuel Level Sending and Gauge

Post by REBMystic »

Hey friends. Looking to see if any of you have experience trouble shooting fuel level indication. I have had this issue for the past 2 seasons and want to fix it over the winter. My fuel gauge will not read all the way full, nor does it read all the way empty (as best I can tell). It will indicate in the mid range. eg - seems kinda accurate at 1/4 full to 3/4 full. Before my 2023 season I had pulled the sensor from the tank to check for visible issues, none found. Seems like it might be the original sensor. So maybe the previous owner put in a gauge not matched with the sensor? Maybe the sensor bad? I have 2001 31' TE. I welcome any suggestions on most efficient way to troubleshoot. I am contemplating pulling the sensor and taking a PVC column of diesel to test the sensor and gauge, but hoping to avoid pulling up the deckplate. :) Thx!

I replaced my original Centroid fuel sending unit with their newer model which auto calibrates. It is a capacitance sending unit / no moving parts. Much more accurate, but I still need to take into account the V shaped fuel tank on my 28 - half full on the gauge does not mean half full in the tank :) Search "Centroid" on the AOG site and you'll find many discussions on them. I think most US senders are standard 240/33 ohm

Following. Rob please post updates on the issue, if you would, if you learn more. Thanks.

I have a similar issue. In my new to me 27FC the fuel gauge consistently shows just under 1/2 full. I have yet to go below 1/2 a tank so I don't know if it is stuck there or just does not go higher. I have been considering pulling the gage in the spring but I think I have to remove at least 50 gallons of fuel to be able to move the tank to get to the sensor. That could be a big process, I may continue to track hours and keep a somewhat full tank.
