I had a similar problem earlier in the year and was caught under Key Bridge in DC with no reverse gear (no brakes) surrounded by kayaks, SUPs, small sailboats and a ton of power craft headed upriver to the Sisters anchorages in Georgetown. Long story short, could engage forward gear, and with careful threading of the needle at low revs until clear of traffic then heading back downstream to my slip - made it home without incident.
Bought new single control (from ITALY) and two new cables - FNR control now perfect.
Consequence: Old single lever control was eminently fixable and is now perfectly operable. If you need it, I'll USPS it to you.

Re: Forward-Reverse cable coming loose.
Thanks! Mine is fine but please hold on to that. Some one might need it. What was going on in this case was thT the stroke was set a bit high by the PO so the cable was the trottle stop. My throttle was clamped in with a friction clamp so when i was going up momentarely at full throttle, it slipped so when i was going back to neutral i had to overcome it and slip it back.. i think the cable is fine but i will replace it anyway.
