Anchor line jams at windlass

Post by Bigsteve51 »

My Lewmar windlass always jams when retrieving the anchor the line seems not to freewill into the anchor locker and ends up jamming the windlass.
Has anyone else had the same experience and if show what was the fix for it.....

I had this issue with 3 strand anchor line sticking to the gypsy and jamming. Switched to 8 plait anchor line and no more jams. It also lays much nicer in the locker. I have a Lofrans Dorado windlass though.

YES - happens to me all the time. Last year I just got new line and 30' of chain, before I knew 8plait was the way to go. I am going to craft an additional line peeler out of some PVC board and see if that will do for now.

Steve, have you called Lewmar tech support? Three-strand will work as long as it's medium lay. Rope that is too soft does not feed well. If you hold the bitter end 8-10" from the end, it should do a gradual curve down. If it drops straight down, it's too soft. Years ago, Lewmar recommended New England Ropes or Samson. It would be worth a conversation with them to see if that's still true.

Interesting. Mine is likely too soft. But I got New England rope from Defender.
