28TE/Fixing hand rail break

Post by JoeinBristol »

Many launch drivers pull alongside your moored boat and grab the hand rail while you board the boat. This strains the rail, and the break is most likely to happen at the weld between the rail and the circular base that's screwed to the deck.

The existing rail looks like 1 in. dia., but did not slide into a new 1-in. base. Likely expanded/deformed by the welding process at the factory. I had to special-order a 1-1/8 inch base, which nobody stocks. Finally tracked it down from Amazon.

That's a good workaround, Joe. Looks nice. Thanks for posting.

Hey Joe, I have the same broken stanchion on my boat. Came back broken after the marina launched the boat this season...good times. I am going to check if my rail is truly 1" in diameter but just in case, can you post the link to the 1-1/8 stanchion base you picked up on Amazon? Also, did the bolts come out easily or did they need some coaxing due to the factory caulking?

Thanks in advance.

I just had mine welded by a guy in Newport. Perfect job but no bill yet. Pulled the base from the speaker.
