hoses for a Cummins

Hi All,
I am going to replace the hoses on my
Cummins 6bt5.9. Do I need to get them from
the Cummins dealer or is there another source
that I should look at.

Straights are OK but many of the hoses on engines are model specific. There is a huge regional Cummins distribtor, in Harrisburg I think. Might have been Reading.

I have tried the NAPA, Autozone etc. route for my 5.9. No luck.

Rich, take a look under Industrial Hose & Rubber in the yellow pages. I work for an industrial and hydraulic hose distributor in Virginia and we carry most of the hoses you'll need. See if any of these folks are close by;

Many carry marine exhaust, water suction, silicon heater hose, fuel hose etc. as well as the fittings and clamps you will need. There may be some preformed coolant hoses that it's easiest to get from CAT but most of the others you can get from an industrial hose distributor and save some $$$.
If you need to replace hydraulic hoses it's best to take the old ones off and take them with you, they just match them up and make then while you wait. Most hoses on a boat have specific required ratings. Use A-1 rated fuel line, wire inserted water suction.... I can't think of any other items off the top but if you have any other questions, let me know.

The hose connectiong the heat exchanger to the exhaust elbow is a 90 degree bend over a few inches. Cummins had installed a flexible hose that when bent would kink, restricting the sea water flow .... in this case so much for the factory hose. Following the thought patterns at Cummins (or I suppose Albin could have put this hose on), I first tried formed pre-bent hoses from the auto supply store .... no luck.

Then dawn broke. I replaced it with wet exhaust hose #252 Lloyds which is wire reinforced / bends the full 90 and with no restriction providing for a full flow of sea water. Trident and other manufacturers are out there too.

Remember heater hoses and hot water tank hoses are add ons anyway.
No need to go to Cummins. Check out the West catalog for reference and there's your jumping off point for types and sizes to match to your application.

I usually get my hydraulic hoses from a company called Gooding Rubber. Not sure if you guys have heard of them but I've been pretty satisfied. Here's a link to their site: hydraulic hoses. Hope that helps.
