Re: thru hull fitting valves
I lied, this should be the last question, should I close the valve, remove the plug, install the grease fitting, open the valve, install the grease, go on to the next one.........

Re: thru hull fitting valves
That would be the procedure. In water: as long as the ball valve is working as it should, with the ball valve closed no raw water should be leaking through from above or below.

Re: thru hull fitting valves
ordered the five fittings and groco grease, even got a Pistol Pete grease gun for the cartridges, another item of work to put on the maintenance list. if the list keeps growing, I'll spend all my time off maintaining all of the systems, and never be able to use the damn boat!!

Re: thru hull fitting valves
Keep at it Gregg. A well maintained boat holds value and in some cases the value increases. I think that with the maintenance and upgrades that you have done and will continue to do in the future, you'll fall into the later.gmberkley wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2023 12:00 pm ordered the five fittings and groco grease, even got a Pistol Pete grease gun for the cartridges, another item of work to put on the maintenance list. if the list keeps growing, I'll spend all my time off maintaining all of the systems, and never be able to use the damn boat!!

Re: thru hull fitting valves
I’m in a similar boat. I sold a perfectly good Albin and may lose the whole season catching up on deferred maintenance on the “new” boat.
Well that and other planned summer diversions. Got some Covid catch up to do. Saul Goodman!
That’s a great tip on the Groco valves. I’ll put that to good use. Info like that keeps me at AOG.

Re: thru hull fitting valves
Also for valves that may don't have removable plugs, I have been happy with Marelube. It's a non-petroleum, synthetic grease that will not damage seals. I usually apply when the boat is of out of the water and apply directly to the ball.

Re: thru hull fitting valves
Fortunately, my three smaller valves have on plug, the two larger ones have two. the fittings should be delivered in a few days, and then the fun begins.
