Caulking

Recently had to do some re-caulking on the interior of the cockpit cabin - a few areas needed touch up so decided to redo the entire hardtop area while I am a younger senior. Due to limited time and patience I decided to buy a de-bonding agent, did some research and settled on Marine De-Bond through Fisheries Supply in Seattle for half the price elsewhere for same product.

I've done a ton of caulk work but never marine caulking, did my research and learned that one had better properly prepare the job site for a messy adventure!

It is a messy job due to the nature of marine caulk. Having tons of plastic baggies and soapy water to use for smoothing the caulk and a taped off work area and tarp to cover everything not getting caulked really helped. Lots of prep work is involved and the space is small so this is truly is a job I don't want to do more than once every ten years.

The De-Bond cut through the caulk after running a blade straight through it a couple of times. I cleaned out the old caulk with a screwdriver, washed it down with soap and water and then denatured alcohol and used Total Boat Marine Caulk according to directions. Worked out perfect and saved a ton of time.

For thirty dollars I still have almost an entire can left over of De-Bond for other caulking projects marine, RV or home and saved myself countless hours and the frustration of 'reefing out' really tough adhesive caulk- well worth the money at this stage in life.
