Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
With the Albin 28TE docked and engine off, raw water intake valve open:
Does the raw water drain down to sea level, OR is there a check valve in the system, OR does the impeller block the passage?
How about on the exhaust side, does the muffler always have sitting water, OR is it dry?
We are considering a move to a residential marina with a dry stack boat hangar: Wondering if I should have the boat tilted bow up before storage, or will the water pump still keep raw water trapped in the various heat exchangers? They use a huge fork lift, I am sure the boat can be tilted bow up.
(If the raw water already drains out as soon as the engine is off, this will not be a factor)
Here is the marina: https://www.marinadelpalma.com/
Similar fork lift: Picture is from survey and sea trial 4 + years ago when I bought my tub.

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
No, the seawater does not drain when lifted from the water. Always keep the bow somewhat elevated as in your attached picture or the seawater from the muffler will back drain through the turbo and into the exhaust manifold. Sometimes lift operators need a couple of reminders.

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
One more note- I have had a couple of lift kept boats, one of them having a 480 Cummins. I always suggest shutting the raw water seacock for the engine prior to haul out. This way the impeller wont lose its prime. We noticed we were going through impellers quicker than normal with the Cummins because it would run dry momentarily while sucking the water back up. On the flip side... dont forget to open it backup before start up. I always hung the keys on the seacock when I closed it so I didn't forget.

I always suggest shutting the raw water seacock for the engine prior to haul out.
Yes, been doing that for 30 years to keep water in the system and to minimize
a dry running impeller when launching a few days later
In this case however, brand new scenario, I want the raw water out of the system so I can leave the boat on a rack without worrying about salt and corrosion inside the heat exchangers.
So, does does raw water drain out with the valves open?
On the other hand, I should run a fresh water flush before pulling out of the water, then close the sea cock to trap the fresh water and protect the impeller.

Flush it and drain the muffler is the safe way to go. Cover the exhaust port if sitting for extended periods.

Great idea. Is there a drain valve somewhere in the muffler system?
(I never winterized my tub, always boated in warm climates)
Will look for one tomorrow, I am starting a new project: Replacing the athwartship 4" muffler hose and clamps.

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
Exhaust hose replaced, plenty water drained from the muffler into the locker, then the bilge, probably 2-3 gallons.
Looks like the bilge water is migrating towards the bilge under cabin hatch:
Got a sump pump up there that was pretty busy yesterday.
(Running with only 30-40 gallons in the fuel tank making the boat bow heavy)

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
So, did you find the typical Albin self tapping screw / drain plug in the aft of the muffler?

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
No, but I forgot to look for it.
I did inspect the hose and clamps behind the muffler, did not notice a plug, but then again I did not specifically look for it.
Will look tomorrow when I start the annual raw water pump replacement program.

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
Looked today: Nada, did not see no drain plug, nor did I feel one running my hand under the muffler.
Maybe my boat was Made For Florida?

Located under the the aft exhaust hose on the same horizontal plane. Did you look and feel there? It's just a relatively small screw.

Hmm, don't think so, I was focused on the muffler.Pitou wrote: ↑Sun Jan 23, 2022 9:09 pmLocated under the the aft exhaust hose on the same horizontal plane. Did you look and feel there? It's just a relatively small screw.
Maybe I will take a look tomorrow, got to clean the deck and bilge after working on the tub 3 days in a row.

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
Yes, on the aft end of the muffler screwed in an inch or so from the bottom beneath where the outflow exhaust hose attaches.
I've seen this on every TE series Albin that I've been on. My 31TE was a FL dealer boatshow boat and my previous/original owner was from NY and it had it. I've since replaced it with a Perko garboard plug.

Re: Yanmar Question: Does the cooling water drain...?
Ha Ha - I had my Centek muffler out of the boat, adding a drain valve... and when I turned it around, I saw this screw tapped into it. I thought it was madness that there was a screw just screwed in, and I took it out, and sealed that area.
Swore someone drove a screw in there by mistake.
