water leak in berth under the cabin

Post by gmberkley »

has anyone had an issue with a water leak in the small berth under the cabin? the water is puddling in the back corner port side. I went to the boat last night and saw the puddle and cleaned it up. went back to the boat this morning after a heavy rain, and the puddle is back. from the attached pic, a water trail can barely be seen, its under the horizontal wood piece, its to the right of the wood screw plug and to the left of where the two upper leather cushions overlap, or about 2" - 3" to the left of the wood cover that is over the water tank. the leak on the wall was more defined last night, and I wiped it away, and then after the fact realized I should have taken a picture of it..............any thoughts as to where I should be looking would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

We had the same problem. Finally traced it back to a leak in the seal of the center hatch cover. Water would leak through the frame of the hatch, flow along to the port side between the cabin headliner and the underside of the deck then down the port side ending up in the under cabin berth. First discovered this when a portion of the headliner became detached from the cabin ceiling. Ripped out some of the headliner only to find the wooden battens where the headliner was stapled to had completely rotted away. Ended up replacing the battens with starboard and installing a new headliner via a grooved frame system. Not a project for the timid.

With the headliner was off I also noticed a stain trail coming from around the port hole window frames and the seam where the deck is fastened to the hull. Also caulked them for safe measure. No more leaks.

Have also noticed water in the corner after a big rain.
Then I replaced all the plastic portholes and have seen no more water inside the boat.
(Had a small leak from the overhead hatch, but careful cleaning and caulking from the outside stopped any more water from coming in.
(I was bracing for a full removal and re-bedding, but knock on wood, the hairline caulk repair stopped any further water intrusion.)

Dale, are you referring to the hatch above the dinette?

thanks all, and yes, I was wondering about the hatch, the one in the center of the cabin over the table/bed? if so, that's a long way for water to travel, yikes, I'm going to have to remove all of my port windows, they all leak and are staining the leather, and some are leaking also between the glass and rubber gasket which is cracked and dried out. hopefully that's where the leak is coming from, and will be fixed when I do the windows this winter.

If you are doing the portholes, search around for best prices: Retail is $250 each, I paid $155 a few months ago when I replaced all 8 portholes.
Highly recommend through bolting.
I did describe the process and left pictures on this forum, look for the sticky thread on upgrades and repairs, etc.

We have removed and re-installed one porthole using the original technique, i.e. not through-bolted. So far so good. I wrote about it here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12434&hilit=port

No, ours are the plastic Beckson ports. Yours are Bomar. You have a thread going on them here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13193&p=88701&hilit ... ort#p88701

Grows by the day, I have a dedicated plastic file box for all the information he's provided, I print everything, even his texts, and cataloged by topic, if he charged me for all the information he's provided, I'd have to sell the boat, and make monthly payments to him. outside of actually building an Albin, I don't believe there is nothing he hasn't done. if not for him, the boat would have been long gone............not sure the AOG knows what they have in him!!!!!!!!!!
