Hot water tank repair

Post by Wilbur »

1979 Albin 34 has been on the hard for 10 + years. A classic that I am bringing back to life. So far I have everything structurally and mechanically working. Lately I have been working on plumbing and electrical issues.
A head scratcher at present is my hot water tank. Been re-wired and everything checks out OK. When I flip the breaker on, it trips the 110 V main breaker. Water tank heats up from the engine but not shore power ( 15 Amp)
Any ideas ? Appreciated.
I already know enough about my fate.

There is a ground fault in the wiring of the tank. Disconnect the tank from the mains and then check each wire to the tank for continuity with metal surfaces of the tank. There is a good chance the short may exist in the electrical heater element.
