Raw Water Impeller

Post by Dave39 »

I've changed my shares of impellers on previous boats, and sometimes it was fairly difficult. As I look at the Yanmar 315 in my 2002 28TE, it appears my arms may not be long enough, there's no way I can crawl in and out of the the cockpit storage bin, and I can barely see the cover plate. Assuming some of you have accomplished this necessary project, can you tell this old submariner who is used to working in very small places, short of paying a yard mechanic, how the h___ did you do it? Thanks.

Dave,

I remove the pump to change the impeller,

Close sea water cock.
Remove the three bolts that hold the water manifold to the pump.
Move the manifold out of the way with hoses still attached.
Remove the two nuts that hold the pump to the engine.
Lift pump out.
Change impeller.
The pump gear driven and has an O ring where it mounts to the engine, make sure it not damaged or falls off.
I keep and extra manifold gasket, O ring, pump gasket with the impeller on hand :D
I think the nuts and bolts take a 14mm wrench...
