Helm Seat Post - Stripped Threads

Post by JackK »

Well now I've got a situation. My helm seat post has stripped the threads on both the base and the pedestal. I'm just hoping that base is not bedded in 5200 or something. The bottom of the deck hatch is covered in sound insulation so I'm guessing that's going to have to go too.

Has anyone replaced a base before?

Seat Post

Thanks Butch -
I think I'll talk to the yard and have them take a look at it. I don't want to risk that pole coming free in seas. Landing on my head wouldn't be good.

A little difficult to propose a fix without seeing the boat but here goes.

If the pedestal is not through bolted remove the screws. Fill the holes with resin & filler. Redrill the holes. Screw the bolts back in.

Better way: As above except through bolt the base. Can you access the underside? Use fender washers underneath to spread the load. This is the way I installed the new bolster seat from Arrigoni in my workboat after I lost my original seat (which I 'stole' from my Albin 27) during a hurricane sinking in 2003.

Never done resin work? Just ask. It is not as intimidating as it seems.

Seat Post

Here is a picture of the pedestal and base. Not very detailed but gives the idea. The base has a flip open cap the covers the threaded post which is recessed inside. The outside of the pedestal is a slip fit to the base and has a threaded hole to receive the post in the base.

There are a series of bolts around the base unit but on my 2003 flush deck this base is mounted on the engine access hatch. The bottom side of the hatch has soundproofing material attached. I'm pretty sure it's just stuck on there but it probably is not going to go back on.

I would think that there would need to be a backer plate here.

I guess I'm going to have to do some surgery to the underside of the hatch to see how complicated this may get. If it is just through bolted then things may not be so complicated.

Thanks for your help.
