Here is a picture of the correct way to install an Elastomuffle. A short length of stainless steel tubing is used at each end to support the muffler and connect to the exhaust hoses. The installation instructions state that the muffler should not come in contact with the hull and should be only supported at the ends.

The damage to your exhaust hose and muffler is consistent with running the engine for an extended period with the cooling water intake blocked. By the time the engine temperature alarm sounds the damage is already done. I have an exhaust temperature alarm to alert me to this condition as it reacts almost immediately to low water discharge in the exhaust system.
