Just bought 2005 28TE. Engine is overheating and steam or white smoke coming from the exhaust like crazy. Changed impeller, raw water pump, cleaned the trap and cooling exchanger and it is still overheating. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you checked transmission cooler? Feel if any of your hoses are solid with a few revs on the engine.

It sounds like the system could do with a rydlyme at minimum.

At risk of being the voice of doom - steam and white smoke from the exhaust can be indicative of a blown head gasket. Just helped a friend to replace one on his boat.

Thanks for the reply. How do you put rydlyme through the raw water cooling system?

These guy will do it for you:

He did my tub a few months ago, I was impressed, good job and $500 was not too much, saved me from pulling 5 heat exchangers.

Thanks for the reply. My mechanic said that I should stay under 3800 rpm. I took it out today and sure enough when I stayed under 3800 rpm the engine stayed at 180. When I went to 4000 rpm, the temp went dramatically up and the high temp light came on. I just feel that the engine should not heat up at high speed.

Max continous RPM is 3,600, 3,800 is max rated, and 4,000 is max ever, plus-minus 50.

You are correct, the engine should run at the normal temp even at full throttle. It is a good idea to
turn the engine up on occasion (at least once a season) and make sure it stays cool. Cooling system
issues show up at high RPM first usually.
