Yanmar 6LP 300hp diesel oil pan replacement
Hello:
I own a 2001 28TE (w/engine box) with the above engine.
While winterizing the engine last month we noticed some rust on the outside of the oil pan........
I would like to have a qualified mechanic replace the oil pan this off season.
Can it be done without removing the engine from the boat?
Has any of you had it replaced it without removing the engine?

Re: Yanmar 6LP 300hp deisel oil pan replacement
I am assuming this is a proper marine or marinized engine, complete with 1/4" thick cast oil pan not needing regular replacement. I would assess other work requiring lifting the engine high enough to remove, prep and replace oil pan. Then, again assuming no oil leakage from gasket surfaces or main seals, I would more likely degrease, rust treat, prime and paint in place. Then again if you're just writing a check...
Rusty oil pan indicates some combination of three things:
1. Errant salt water spray in engine compartment.
2. Intact gaskets and seals that have kept pan free of oil slobber, a known rust inhibitor.
3. Poorly prepped metals prior to painting.
I opted to remove my entire engine from the boat, though painting the oilpan was not the driver.

Re: Yanmar 6LP 300hp diesel oil pan replacement
The oil pan has major rust on one side and needs to be replaced.
I will have the motor removed from the boat in February, repaired, and replaced.
While it is out I will have all of the senders replaced.
It's gonna cost a ton.....

Re: Yanmar 6LP 300hp diesel oil pan replacement
I have a mechanic here on the Chesapeake that tells me that he can do the pan in a 28 engine box without pulling the motor. I trust him as he works on a lot of Albins but I would Have to see it in person.

Re: Yanmar 6LP 300hp diesel oil pan replacement
I am a new member and my name is Brian Prydderch and I purchased my 2000 Albin 28 a year ago. In the paper work that I got with the boat it states that the oil pan was replaced in 2014 and the cost was $2,500. Seems to me that the engine had to come out for that amount of money. Wish I could help further. Brian.

I think I’d rather do it with engine out. Gives you a chance to address any other issues that’s caused the sump pan corrode.

Had mine done last year on. 2003 Albin 28.
While out, I said do “whatever” needs to be done.
The pan was replaced by a new “epoxied” pan.
All heat exchanges were completely cleaned and total new water pump, not just impeller.
$12K

Re: Yanmar 6LP 300hp diesel oil pan replacement
Recap: $7200.00 later, my engine runs like a top...and probably 20 degrees cooler than I've seen in years (although I have rid-lymed regularly).
The above figure does not included the cost of removal/installation of the engine.
