Re: Brass plate?
Hopefully the sheen stays... i been thinking about how painful it will be to spiff up the cabin but i had a can of varnish so I thought i try. Sure to make it look like a violin it takes a lot. A quick sanding with 220 and a sloppy coat of epifanes looks way better thsn old oxidized Albin varnish.....

Re: Brass plate?
I just hate painting and my wife refuse working with stinky paint... i was mostly thinking that one had to sand it all down, multiple coats ...... could not believe it was this easy

Think you can remove the water damage with oxalic acid

Re: Brass plate?
Our aft cabin door ( lower half) has a s/s plate to cover some dings. Don't believe that or a brass plate over the head door was factory original. Always good to see my "sister ship" one hull number apart. Mine still has some of the plastic trim pieces around the oval openings under the settees, but they're getting fragile & some pieces missing.

Re: Brass plate?
Its crumbling behind but under the varnish it looks great!!!
Only God can remove that type of water damage. I would probably have to help him bringing the wood back to Honduras first.

Re: Brass plate?
OK hold on... so you are saying you took 220 paper and sanded a bit, then put on 1 coat of varnish and it did that? And with Epifanes you mean something like this: http://www.epifanes.se/portfolio-item/blank-klarlack-4/
I need to try that! The oval openings on your picture look much better like that compared to my nasty and broken plastic trim.
And about that brass plate, clearly it's a mirror!

Re: Brass plate?
Yeah, I was wondering if you ever did take it off to peek under.
Wait... that didn't sound right.
I'm referring to the brass plate on the door, of course.
