Shaft Seals for 31 TE?

Post by Jestark »

So, surveyor is recommending replace shaft seals on our recently purchased 31 TE. Any one brand that stands out? I've looked at Lasdrop, Tides marine, and PSS. Thoughts?

Here is a good article in Passage Maker describing the differences between lip seal & face seal shaft seals as well as the traditional stuffing box.
https://www.passagemaker.com/technical/ ... haft-seals

When I replaced my dripless shaft seal in 2014, I replaced it with the Tides SureSeal and added a spare carrier with 2 additional lip seals enclosed for future servicing. So far, so good.

Thanks Kevin. Was this a DIY job? I looks doable, but tight quarters of course!

DIY .. for some, but not for me. Not enough time on my hands and not enough patience. I bought in an outside mechanic. Then there is the skill set needed to align the shaft when putting it back to together and checking again once you're in the water.

As you recognize, you'll need to crawl under your center fuel tank to remove the shaft from the coupling in order to slide the shaft backwards / sure is tight in there! The rudder will need to be disconnected from the skeg in order to move it far enough to the side to slide the shaft back as well. Be sure to check the cutlass because this will be the opportune time to get this done too.
