A27 top speed

Hey all, I purchased a 1990 27 this summer and am wrapping up a total rebuild on it. I took out the 157 Isuzu and replaced it with a 320 hp Cummins mercruiser. Just wondering if anyone has ever owned or seen a 27 albin with more power than 157 and what the numbers looked like?

You gotta be talking about a 27 Sport, right? If you put a 320HP engine in a family cruiser, you're gonna be the only one ever! Ben

Keep us informed on that project, I for one would love to see performance numbers when you get it in the water. Some video of it at flank speed would be great too.

Are these not semi-displacement hulls?

If so then why not also buy a barbecue for the pushpit and burn $20 bills on it while travelling at hull speed plus a couple of knots, maybe?

If I get to 9 knots I'm looking to see what's pushing me other than wind and tide working together. I normally cruise at ca. 6-6.5 knots at ca.2700 rpm; anything else seems excessive. While I know they'd go faster, the fuel usage would be way beyond what they were built for. This years shiny new prop might give me a whole new outlook on life, but.....

Hi, I looked at a 1991/3? A27ac that had the180hp mercruiser 6 cyl diesel but really was a BMW that was made from a Italian VM motor base engine! (VM are a huge engine builder)
I was told it did 18 knots. It had a large 4 blade wheel and some large wood rails in the side underwater at the turn of the bilge.
The MERCRUISER/BMW's were an odd engine with a minor overheating issue if not maintained properly. Scared me a little but should have bought it as the rest of the boat was made way better than the 80's models that I ended up with. I knew of one other AC model that had the 180 hp too.

Rails like that are sometimes added to increase lift and make it easier for the hull to plane. A walk around any boatyard will show that most planing hulls have hard, sharp angles at the chine for the same reason.

The A27 has well rounded “soft” chines, not ideal to promote lift, because it wasn’t designed to plane.

Hi, I have a 1992 Express with the Cummins 6BT 210hp and the highest speed I got up to on the GPS was 18.9 mph. Got that in both directions with full fuel tanks and fresh water and it was also at the beginning of the season last year with fresh bottom paint. Hope that helps..

i have a '85 27FC. Previous owner repowered with a Yanmar 160hp. 17.5x19 prop. Cruise mostly at 2700 rpm... see 10 - 11 knots. Fuel burn is higher but acceptable as I mostly do day cruising.

Our 1990 Albin 27FC with a new bottom job, Bennett trim tabs, new 18 x 18.5 x #6 cup (1.5" shaft) propeller, 650 hr. Yanmar 4JH4 - TE; WOT speed is 12.2 mph. Our normal average cursing speed is 8.0 mph @ 2200 rpm with a .90 gph fuel burn. All of the above with a boat fully loaded with fuel and water plus stores for a week long cruise.

If I hit 9kts I'm cursing the guy pushing on my swim step. But then I spend most of my sea time trolling at 4-ish knots while reading my kindle.
