Ambler, right on all counts!
Actually they widened the opening on both sides. I plan on using glass cloth to fill in the gaps in the channel. That starboard corner does need some support, especially if I hinge that small section. I'll skip the channel. Dust? Certainly a concern!

I can’t guess at how fast the dust from sanding fiberglass could foul an air filter, but I know you don’t want to explore the envelope with that shiny engine. Diagonal supports across the corners may help stiffen the deck (if needed), but it could be tricky. Very best of luck.
