Airsep for 6lp

Post by Jkraft »

Hi all, a few people have recommended changing the factory foam filter on my yanmar to the walker air sep. I’ve been doing some research and am not sold on it yet. Have any of you made the switch and if so would you do it again? What are the benefits?

I did last year. High summer temps was giving me a bit of a haze behind the boat under load against the tide. Swapped out for the airsep - except it’s not a full airsep but in reality a free flow filter like a K&N No more haze and no more soot mark on the water line. In reality I need to strip the intercooler and clean it but the walker filter is certainly 100 time’s better than the oem one from yanmar. Service intervals on the filter should be massively reduced and the added bonus of the flow meter built into it should tell you when it does need cleaning and re oiling. Down side - turbo whistle is a fair bit louder!

Yes. Takes about five minutes to swap them over.

Sorry, I meant removal of old and re-installation of new filter housing/intake.
Did you have to remove anything else to do the swap?

Nope - just unbolt the old one as it’s clamped onto the inlet flange of the turbo. Just a big jubilee clip if I recall. The airsep is just the same in reverse. Just locate the vacuum gauge so you can read it easily to confirm the filter isn’t blocked

Being new to the yanmar 6lp-ste, I have a dumb and simple question. To change the foam air filter do I simply unwrap it from the intake - or does the intake have to be removed?

just unwrap it - no point cleaning it as they're quite cheap
