Re: Modifications, repairs and improvements, 28TE
Time to replace the macerator pump: It has been acting up lately.
Bought a Raritan this time, hoping is better than the Jabsco and it should be at twice the price.
Took me 2 hours to remove the old pump and assemble new hoses and hose clamps.
Pump is going in tomorrow, hopefully no leaks, no problems.. Also installing a brain for the poo-poo pump.

Re: Modifications, repairs and improvements, 28TE
Pump is in, electronic controller is in, it all works good.
No leaks in the plumbing, but while I was in there under deck installing the pump we got a heavy rain: Big deck leak right on top of the holding tank, not just drops, but like a small dog peeing. WTF..?
Today I did a test, went back inside while wifey used garden hose on various external components starting with the midship cleat: Nope, not that one, next was the louvered vent, yup, water poring in, just like in the rain shower.
Got the vent out and found large openings at the bottom of the sandwich: The balsa had rotted away and rain went straight down to the holding tank area, then to the bilge. Always wondered how I got so much freshwater in the forward bilge...
Looks like the factory was sloppy and did not seal the scar after they cut the rectangular hole for the vent.
(There was some caulking in the area, but it had failed miserably.)
Now cleaned and drying out with heat gun and heat lamp.
Will let it dry for a few days, then inject epoxy with micro balloons to fill and seal.
Had to destroy the old vent to remove as it was stuck, probably 5200.
Ordered a new vent at Amazon for $40, Atwood, part # 1488.
Recommended everybody else remove the same vent and inspect the area.

Sealed with epoxy and cored the sandwich with a 3/16” dowel, cured, trimmed of excess materials, sealed joints with marine epoxy, let it cure and installed new vent facing backwards.
Total cost, including SS vent, $50 or so.

Re: Modifications, repairs and improvements, 28TE
Time to change all 6 zincs and coolant.
As usual it was a fight to get the hidden one out from the forward end cap of the primary heat exchanger, way hidden and hard to reach.
Removed the raw water hose connecting the tranny cooler on the Port side and remove the small coolant elbow hiding the end-cap and end-cap zinc. (Corrosion under the elbow with cracked paint, a clean up on a wire wheel and 2 coats of Yanmar grey took care of it)
A few notes:
4 of the pencil zincs were beyond their due date: Swollen and stuck in the treads , will do 9 months next time, instead of 12.
One zinc broke of inside the oil cooler, had to remove oil filter and oil cooler end cap, then force in back in with a small screw in the zinc nut and prey out with a needle nose plier.

Gunk in the heat exchanger: Removed it with a finger after removing forward end-cap hose.
Flushed out old coolant with 2 gallons of filtered water after coolant was drained. Then added this: Approved by Yanmar as per an old memo Mack Boring sent me yesterday. Tranny fluid and fuel filters to go, then I am done for this year...

Re: Modifications, repairs and improvements, 28TE
Changed both fuel filters today as well as tranny fluid and filter.
Did not drain the Racor bowl last time, but did now: Some water, some gunk, but the 30 micron did it’s job.
(Previous boat I used 5 micron on both filters, has anybody used less than 30 on the Yanmar Racor?)

Re: Modifications, repairs and improvements, 28TE
Hi everyone, this thread seems to be very popular and I need to ask if anyone knows where I can get a replacement rudder and assembly for a 28' TE? I know the manufacturer is no longer is business but besides getting one fabricated from scratch, I have not found anything and running out of options. I apologize for asking something out of the blue but any leads are much appreciated!!

My Yanmar LPA STP needs a new oil cooler (Yanmar p/n 119775-33000) . The Yanmar dealer here in SoCal quoted a price of $1,547.44+tax for the unit. Ouch! I usually prefer genuine Yanmar parts, but I found the same unit online (mrcool.us) for $735.00. does anyone have experience with this brand of oil cooler?

I would have a metal shop make the pieces from scratch, that or look for wrecked or hurricane damaged Albin with a good rudder.Wish You Were Here wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2019 3:34 pm Hi everyone, this thread seems to be very popular and I need to ask if anyone knows where I can get a replacement rudder and assembly for a 28' TE? Re: Modifications, repairs and improvements, 28TE
I would buy the mrcool model in a hearth beat, doubt the original Yanmar cooler is any better. (After seeing the original cast iron mixer elbow with a high price tag and a 5 year life span, not impressed)Ben423 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2019 6:27 pm My Yanmar LPA STP needs a new oil cooler (Yanmar p/n 119775-33000) . Time for a deep detail job: 2 years since I had the boat wet-sanded, compounded, polished and waxed.
2 wax jobs in between.
No wet sanding this time, only compound, polish and wax.
3 workers, estimating 2 full days.

7 hours later and the Port side is almost done.
The tub is already shining after the compound work, final coat of polish/wax is not on yet.
Using this stuff for final, best in business as far as I am concerned

Norseman, thank you for the reply. I actually found the manufacturer...however, it will take 5-6 weeks to manufacture. Do you have any idea where I can find wrecked or hurricane damaged Albins??
