Albin25 rudder

Post by Keviom »

Just like to pick a brain or two...I have had an inch or two of salt water entering my 25 and eventually located the source at the rudder arm which has developed a knocking which disappears when a hand is put on it.
This is my first albin25 so would like to tap into the knowledge of the group, basicly ..help lol.
I presume it is the fibre gland that has let go and also would it be safe to use on short trips on low revs till she comes out around September ...many thanks kev

This is for re-sealing the rudder, but also applies to swapping the bushing.

An inch or two of water, in two minutes or two months? Check the tube riser in the aft cabin. Is it leaking only at the top or is water coming in farther down towards the hull, which would be more urgent in my mind? That said, I ignored it for a couple years until Mr. K posted how to fix it. All parts are readily available if not at your local hardware store for 0-rings, but bushings from Albinmotor.

If the boat is in the water and you don't have a trailer, keep a good eye on it. Our leak was intermittent, indicative of the seal being above the resting waterline.

Sorry williec I should have given more detail,it looks to be weeping from the top of the riser in the aft cabin, the water gathers after a couple of days and can feel a good bit of play on the shaft which is making a knocking when at idle which I presume would indicate the seal/bush has collapsed...would you happen to have a link or number for albinmotor,I will get the parts ordered up ready for when she's lifted out

I do not have those numbers at hand. The Albinmotors site is tricky to navigate, maybe somebody else can weigh in. Consider top and bottom bushing pieces. The lower is a welded stainless assembly with a bushing and washer. It bolts into the end of the skeg. Somebody here recently bought and installed one.. Mine is still serviceable but is showing its age.

Anyone, anyone? Buehler?

Here is the URL for the Albin Motor page that displays all the parts for the rudder stock.
https://albinmotor.se/en/albin-boat-spa ... boat-ad21/
They have redesigned the upper bushing and it looks like it comes with two o-rings which simplifies things when it comes to replacement. Knock out the old o-ring carrier and replace it all with a single bushing.

Albin Motor has reformatted their web site and it took me a while to realize the english version is accessed by a drop down box in the upper right corner of the web page for the on-line catalogue. This really simplifies navigating the site. Stefan is quite good with english and is very helpful if you have any questions.

Given the play you have in the rudder stock you might want to replace both the upper and lower bushings.

Not only does Mr. K rebuild AD21 engines in his sleep he does it in Swedish! Even I knew the page translated!

(Thanks for the link D.)

Upon further inspection the tube has a little bit of play and the water is coming in where the glass finishes onto it.
The top of the rudder pin was dry but has a hell of a rattle so I presume the bush is shot no matter what...the bottom of the rudder sits on the ground when I dry out even though I'm sat on the bilge keels, could this be putting weight on the tube maybe ?

Sounds like it does. I’d be concerned about that
