So this is more of a me complaining thread, because I have a plan...I think. But I do want to know how others have dealt with the issue. Soo...two major issues
1) my fuel guage won't go above half - when you turn on the power to it, it makes a full sweep but when filling won't go above half
2) I don't think my tank is filling completly. I haver pulled the deck yet, but when I tap on the tank I can't find a fluid level. My guage read 3/8 full and then after maybe 8 gallons it read half and suddenly burped about 1/2 gallon of diesel very suddenly out both vents and the fill.
Now over the winter I checked the vent hoses and they were drooping so I zip tied them up as I read this could cause issues (issues have been happening since I got the boat)
So the plan- pull the deck friday and pull the float to Check the level of fuel, if low theb proced to pulling vent hoses and cleaning them out and replacing them (or just getting new). Also make sure hoses are way up with no bends. I'd the tabk is full i will still check the hoses and tie them up but I will then test the resistance of the float to see if that the problem, if it seems ok...new guage.
Does this sound reasonable?
Different plan?

could be simply a spider made a nest in the vet caps, I had this problem and cleaned them out and its ok now.
I would check that first, does it bubble out when you fill it? Can you hear air coming out?

I can hear air comig out the vents and fuel spurts out the vents as I fill. Your right tho I should check them prior to pulling the floor.

I had strange things happening with the fuel gauge - like the needle jumping - when we bought the boat. The fuel level sensor is really cheap as far as boat parts go, so I replaced it. Mine was a WEMA SSL-15.5. It was about $40. Just to be sure the problem was fixed, I also replaced the gauge. It was cheap also - like $25. Never had a problem, or doubted the gauge since. I didn't have to pull the floor though, so yours sounds like it will be more work.

First off a big thanks to Ray for his efforts to save me time. Unfortunately he didn't get to me in time. But the effort is appreciated. So I pulled the rear deck (two hours I'll never get back) obly to find no access to the sending unit. So I went to plan B. I pulled the vent hoses and fuel fill to check the level - full. So i re ran the hoses and cleaned them all. That done I tested the guage per the instructions and the guage is fine. Meaning the sender I can't get to is the problem:/. So after some thinking and talking to Ray and a couple buddies. Im going flowscan. So anyone put one in?

I too have a 1998 Abin 28 and have been searching for the fuel sender. I once did a floscan (and another time a competitor) but both in gas engines..which was an easy plug and play..and not too expensive...when I looked into doing this with a D engine much more spendy and more stuff cause you have to deal with the fuel returned to the tank while running. Currently use a "dip stick" for accuracy (my gauges are pretty reliable..E means 7 gallons left
