Drain plug transom light.....?

Post by Mike Monte »

An 28TE neighbor of mine in my marina recently purchased / installed a drain plug light

Jiawill 316L Stainless Steel Underwater 1/2" NPT 9 to 30V 27w Boat Drain Plug Light with Internal Driver and Overheat Protection 3 Years Warranty

It is really bright...and for the price, why not give it a shot??

The unit (stainless steel) is for 1/2" drains. My friend went to Home Depot and purchased the bronze fittings to to retro-fit it to the appropriate size.
The wiring is no issue.

I already have a pair of small blue LED's and have thought about upgrading to brighter (bigger) lights but everything out there is so expensive. Hopefully the blues will match.

Yesterday I ordered one of the above on Amazon and it is to be delivered tomorrow (Monday). My boat is scheduled to be launched on Wednesday.

I am wondering though, will there be an adverse reaction between the stainless steel and the bronze fittings in a saltwater environment?

Any thoughts?

Keep a eye on it for electrolysis. Drain plugs are not normally bonded but are bronze and normally do not have any issues with corrosion. However now you have introduced a second metal and it will have a reaction just how much is the question...

I looked at one of these things a long time ago - I echo what Mike says about galvanic corrosion as my concerns were these are chinese made and will be made from inferior stainless.

On inspection of my drain plug, i did find though that mine is bonded.
