Can’t sleep if the valve was not perfectly aligned so I removed it, took it apart and marked the housing before assembly and re-install.

And of course make sure you have it right as to flow, the inlet and outlet.

It will be more likely to plug more in the up with the hindge on the bottom. The flapper will still seal. Get a round cheap hand held mirror, like ladies use to see the back of their hair. Lay it on the bottom loosen the clamps and twist away...

After much cursing I got the flapper valve housings out. Cut off the flapper and reassembled. All drains now actually drain! We use the boat for cruising and do not fish so I'm not concerned about water coming into the cockpit when aggressively backing down. Thanks for your helpful advice.

Just a quick safety point. Anything that causes water to flow strongly against the transom, such as being tied to a dock with strong winds from aft, can push water back up the drains.

Part of the "heavy duty" nature of Albins is that they did all of these fittings "right". Flapper valves, vented loops, etc.

Just something to be aware of.

For the last 3 seasons I had my 28TE the flapper valves were removed. Never an ounce up through the drains. Even when stern anchored fishing over the wrecks.

You talking about the deck hatch drain check valve, OR the upper flapper valve for the direct discharge cockpit drain?

I hesitate to modify a proven design, hence I maintian and service What is on the boat, but torn, perhaps there is a better solution?

Norseman - talking about the deck hatch drain check valve only. I would not mess with the direct discharge cockpit scuppers.

DougSea - thanks for your input. I thought long and hard about the problem before removing the flapper before concluding that the risk of getting water backup in the cockpit from the deck hatch drains was minimal. I noted the flapper removal in my log so that the next owner would be aware of the modification.
