28TE Cockpit Hatch Drains
Wondering if anyone has a problem with their cockpit hatch drains draining? And if so, how did you solve the problem. My cockpit hatches each have a small drain that go to transom thru hulls. There is very little drop between the hatch drain fitting and the thru hull so there is not much drainage. I flush the drains frequently, but they always back up. I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Yes they have very little fall (difference from water height entering and leaving equals fall). There is a check valve that gets fouled very easily.

Mike and Rob, thanks. I don't recall seeing a check valve, but I'll be at the boat tomorrow and will see if I can find it. Rob, if it's on the transom through hulls I'll try your donut fix.

Got the same problem, water level in the drains are right up at deck level.
I did search your post and found this:
Question:I removed the flapper from the check valve housings and replaced with a donut I cut out of a square of gasket materials. Worked like a charm and no problems with reverse flow. If I had a cockpit full of guys and backed down hard maybe it would have but I never did. No more water in the bilge after a good rain or deck washing..
Where is the check valve housing....?

It is after all the drains on each side tie together (all port) (all starboard) and the transom thru hull. It is very close to the deck and get a mirror. The lid by the helm is tied to one or the other I don’t recall. The large deck scupper hose is in the same area so lots going on.

Rob, found them. Question - why didn't you use the existing flapper gasket with the flapper cut out rather than construct new gaskets?

Wow, I missed that, thx.. Here's the link to that old thread and here's 2 pics, the check valve housings are way back towards the transom.
For some reason I thought the boat was low in the water rather than a stuck check valve.

We were doing a lot of offshore drift and bottom fishing and I wanted to make sure that when I had a few fat guys in the back of the boat and we were rockin' and rollin' that no water would come back through and up the drains. So I wanted to be able to go back with the flappers if needed or perhaps modify the original flappers to be less restrictive. Fortunately, backflow was discovered to never be an issue.

Rear deck corner transom drains have black plastic flapper valves. One is missing. Where do I source replacement?

Pedro, it's an entire scupper unit. http://www.marineeast.com/a_sch/sch_cat ... 3&cat=6109. Also available in white - 6109W. I'd suggest calling MarineEast to see if they can sell just the cover if that's all you need.

Ok Rob and Mike.
Found the valve, removed everything and sure enough, the valve was fouled with gunk.
Cleaned it and re-bedded scupper, did the install, then realized the flapper should probably hang down, which is why the rubber had a notch in it...
Damn, got to either take everything out, or use a smart phone camera to work in the blind and twist the valve housing to make the flapper hang down. (Or is that only necessary for flappers with metal weights like in head plumbing...?)
