RPM / Hours gauge

Post by dgetswet »

Before winterizing the boat for the end of season the light and numbers for the hour meter went out. The day I was purchasing the boat this past September it did the same thing but came back on.
Anyone ever have this issue? Any suggestions for when I open it up in the early spring.

I'm a new owner so I do have so many questions. I hope it sparks some good conversations.

Happy New Year to all

Don

How about posting a picture of your gauge? An Aetna or ??

It really depends on what gauge you have. My new gauges had separate wiring for each of the lights but the Yanmar Factory setup had one connection for all. If it is a 28TE access is behind the bathroom cabinet.

I tried to post a photo. I'm really not sure how to do it on this site. If someone can explain I would definitely do it. When I hit submit image I get this Image

Thank you, Jeremy, for the fix. My eyes hurt just looking at it. (Maybe it was Nancy, but thanks to all the moderators. The one place you don't want to make a mistake is in the subject line. I think everything else is editable by the Original Poster.)

dgetswet, attaching photos is child's work. Literally. We old geezers don't live and breathe all this new stuff, or care to for the most part. If no kids are around, check out this link:

I hope this helps a bit. FYI, I am posting most of my pictures from a laptop. Posting from smartphones may be easier, but I do not have any great-grandchildren yet.

Would anyone know where I can get this gauge fixed or a new one? It seems the light is going out showing the engine hours. I would love to keep the original hours to move forward if possible.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

If it is just the light and numbers, but the tach still reads RPM - I would guess there is a ground wire that may be corroded/loose

Thanks. I'll have to check that out first when I open her up. Praying the weather starts changing soon so I can start the prep work for a hopefully long beautiful season.

Thanks

Both my hour meters on our VDO tachs were none functional when we purchased our 31.I took them to Forster Instruments in Mississauga On.Can.Both tachs had a faulty gear in the meter which they replaced and are working fine now.

I wouldn't even know where to look for someone around here that does that kind of work. I thought about purchasing a new one but I really would like to keep the hours in tack.

Thanks

I have the same Tacho, which started going ratty over a period of time. First with the needle pulsing, not steady. Then the hours numbers started having a memory problem and eventually went brain dead, with the needle locked midway in one position. After installing a new VDO Tacho, that needle also pulsed at different times. I found putting the running lights on the needle would stay steady. Next was a new Alternator, a Prestolite 90A AS128, the same as yours. Now the tacho is operating normally. This year I took Rob's advice, fitting Volt meters for the crank and house batteries. Well worth it, knowing exactly what the battery state is. With your VDO Tacho - if just the numbers are faulty, there is available a ribbon cable to restore the numbers. It requires dismantling the tacho to get inside it and replace the ribbon. A bit of a fiddly job, but easily doable. I see you can now get the LCD screen, including the ribbon. Saves the messy job of cleaning and re-gluing the ribbon to the original LCD screen. Graeme K
