high trans temp alarm
I have a 2007 28TE. This past weekend I had a high trans temp alarm go off. I checked the transmission and it was cool. Now as soon as I start the engine cold, the alarm goes off. Any ideas? Thanks for any feedback.

Re: high trans temp alarm
It is a 315 yanmar with zf 63 transmission. One problem is I can’t find the sensor on tranny or heat exchanger

Re: high trans temp alarm
Quite possible it does not exist and the alarm is not actually connected to anything and is giving you a false alarm because of a fault in the wiring. Post some really good pictures of your tranny and gear cooler, from several angle and perspectives.

Rob,
Here are the pictures. I also posted to maintenance forum since I realized that might be the proper place.

Re: high trans temp alarm
Good pics. You do not have a gear temp or pressure alarm.

Re: high trans temp alarm
What would I need to look for if myself or anyone else had one? (I’m pretty sure I don’t based on those pictures)

Re: high trans temp alarm
There would be a temperature switch (looks like a sending unit) installed either down at the valve block or T'd into the gear cooler. All that is in his pictures is the neutral safety switch.

Cheers for that Rob. It’s quite prominent and I’m pleased to say I don’t have one.

Re: high trans temp alarm
Why would you be pleased to not have a high temp or low pressure alarm on your gear?

Re: high trans temp alarm
Something less to go wrong....
Almost 2000 hours on the engine now. Oil is swapped out every 50 hours, trans oil swapped out every 50 hours coolers rydlyme once a year etc. The engine gets a lot of love and maintenance. I shouldn’t have reason for the transmission to be getting hot - oil comes out with no sign of degradation each time.
The only things to have failed me on this engine have been a Toyota fitted core plug and a solenoid. I like my engines to be mechanical as possible.

Re: high trans temp alarm
Wow, overkill?. Oil is swapped out every 50 hours, trans oil swapped out every 50 hours
I change my oil every 125 hours as per the Yanmar bible.
Why every 50 hours, do you know something I don’t?

Re: high trans temp alarm
I machine parts for the local yanmar and Volvo dealers. I once mentioned to one of the mechanics if he had any oil for my engine in his van. Ever since he drops off his left over “top up” gallon cans each week and as a result I have an abundance of yanmar spec oil and Volvo spec oil. I keep the yanmar stuff, a friend who has the a Volvo gets that.
I only swap out the filters once a year but it means my oil stays pretty golden with no chance of sludge build up on what some people would think is a high hour engine.

Re: high trans temp alarm
Ah, spare oil.
My high school buddy's father was the local Standard Oil distributor. They had a certain monthly allotment for gasoline "spillage", no small portion of which ended up in a 250 gallon above ground tank in their back yard, and subsequently into several of our cars. We called it The Sacred Flow.
My dad, on the other hand, was Packaging Manager at General Brewing's Lucky Lager plant. We didn't spill much of that.
