Hi all! I have met a few of you when I went to Ladysmith this summer looking at one of only two 25's that were for sale, the other being in Whitehorse..... well I did not buy the historic boat but I did find one. We wanted one with a newish motor and that ended up being the main item on our list, I just didnt want to be the one to do an engine install so with that we went in search of something.......anything..... there just wasnt anything around advertised but we did find one. I call it our new engine with a free boat and a trailer! It is a project but its also usable right away and thats what we did even though we should not have really used it without more detailed inspection and some repair but that is just the way we roll.

This is it at home after staying on it 4 nights and putting on 15 hours on the engine getting it to our home port of Ganges on SaltSpring Island.

I already have a big list of fixes so Ill try to post about it along with questions etc

This next image is with the aft cockpit hatch removed showing the many hoses on this thing.

Main items on the list will be addressing the over powered/under propped situation. The engine is a fairly new Volvo 55HP. Way too much power for this boat but thats just the way it is, I will get a new bigger prop for it and thats that! It has 420 hours on it and so far looks like a good install. It runs well, smooth and quiet and there was many dollars spent on the refit so with some diligent maintenance I hope it runs for some time.
But no pics of that yet.

Here is some ugly!

This head thru hull has either frozen or corroded through, look close where the writing is and where the ball would usually glide along. A split casing and closing the valve stops the water but yikes! it was one of the things that gave me the eeby jeebies! I did make a proper size plug for this thru hull in case it went, obviously I will be replacing this with a bronze valve.

WTH? Nice hose there! I think this is the cheapest household hose one can buy and its used below water line to feed the electric toilet fill. scary.

Nice clean electrics though...... This just hurts my head looking at it. So much wire etc but hardly anything functions other than the horn.

More excellent cheap green garden hose! Along with exposed wires makes the head a liability, yes the wires are live in there!

That's why the "D" in "DPO" stands for "Dreaded Previous Owner".

Were you at the BC Albineers rendezvous in Ladysmith on July 21-22nd? Was that "historic" boat you looked at happen to be "Alanje"?

If so, we, along with WillieC were there too, for a total of six Albin 25's and two A27's in attendance.

Not only that, on July 23rd-24th we made an overnight stop at Ganges for fuel & holding tank pumpout.

Be that as it may, it seems no two Albin 25's are alike, even within same model years. They're really like customized antique classic hot rod cars, only the basic structure is original. Which by the way, if you're wondering what that metal strap is over the middle of your forward cabin window, it appears to be the upper shroud "chain plate" attachment for a later version sail rig.

Wow, we are almost neighbours! Looks like you have a few projects to keep you busy over winter. If you come over to Pender drop me a line, there are 3 Albin owners over on this rock. If you want advice or ideas drop me a line or come over as a walk on - its free for seniors!

The boat may be looking a bit rough in places but looking at your pictures the main structural elements look sound. Take a yoga course this winter - it helps with getting into the awkward spaces.

Make sure the yoga class involves walking on hot coals and laying on a bed of nails interspersed with fiberglass shards soaked in rancid diesel. You'll be fine!

If I am right, we did talk with you at Ladysmith. Your concern was making sure the boat had good bones with the major issues taken care of. Nice find with this boat. All the incidental stuff you can just consider maintenance and learning all about your own boat. Things you need to know anyway!

Congratulations! 55hp!? Better be looking at water skis!

Yes, yoga might help acquire the necessary skills/abilities to become a contortionist. Like this friend of ours from Utah who practices yoga regularly.

yup I was looking at Alanje and I did go onto or look at all the 25's but not the 27. Was nice to meet everyone and I will have questions.

I cant walk on the ferry for free yet but thanks for the invite, will most likely be wandering around by boat next year as my wife has never seen most of the Gulf Islands or if you or anyone comes to SaltSpring get in touch, I like looking at all the differences of these boats.

The boat has many of the sailing items like the chain plates, mast step area with the pole in the veeberth down to the sole structure, some tracks for the jib sheets, eyelets all over the place etc.

The previous owner only had it for a year and didnt use it much, it had two trees fall on it, one damaging the port bow pulpit and the other falling on the starboard side damaging the top deck to hull joint along with shattering the rubber bump strip or whatever it is called, so is there somewhere to get 6' of that?
The owner prior to the last owner rigged it up for fishing. Rod holders around the back, good ones too! Scottie downrigger mounts with electric plugs on each side, and he had 2"x 6" wood spanning the cockpit seats with a pedestal chair sitting on it.

Rod holders, 4 of them, with the downrigger mount 2 of those except he used some crappy plastic to mount them on and they are all cracked and warped.

If you look close you can see what I think is the end of a zap strap stuck between the bellows and the collar, hence the leaking. I noticed this after taking a whole bunch of pics all over the boat particularly the hard to see spots.

Nice boat. Nothing huge to fix. I bought ours on the same general principle: new engine but needing lots of other work. I believe I read something somewhere in the recent past that the rubrail material is available from Sweden

Anyone have a chunk of rubrail? 5' of it for sale on this side of the Atlantic?

Look like the mast step pole comes out, is there any reason to keep this in place? Once removed does it affect sitting on the coach roof like sag or flex? It is really in our way and would like to remove it.

On this pole is the sliding table that looks like a very nicely built and solid mechanism but the table does not slide down to form the gap filler for the vee berth, it sits ontop of the small coaming of the bed. We are going to keep a larger foam bed set up permanently in the vee and use the cockpit table set up in lieu of it so a filler piece will need to fit in that spot. I might keep the original table in the basement and not cut it up..yet.

I am going to try to keep this boat as original or easily converted back to original as I can but my wife and I are pretty tall and we will need to adapt the boat a bit for us to fit. An example of that will be to trim off six inches or so from the cockpit table so we can squeeze by it easily.

That "piece" you are asking about is for the support post for the v-berth table.

My boat has the table stored on wooden cleats in the head compartment, against the bulkhead. A short aluminum pole slides into that fitting you show. The underside of the table has a matching socket and sits on the top of the pole. The table also has a folding wooden leg to support the other end.

So... basically, it is for the v-berth table support pole.

I wouldn't worry about taking the mast support post out, unless you have a mast of course. It serves no other structural purpose but I bet it does make your cabin top super solid! A regular, non-sail rigged boat doesn't have it.

Actually, if you have the original Albin table that stores in the head, then you have the V-berth table also. It serves double-duty! I forgot to mention that. You just jogged my memory.

When it is used in the cockpit, one edge "clips" to a bracket on the aft cabin door and the folding leg supports the other end.

If you take a look underneath, you may see the matching socket for the support pole for V-berth use.
