Air filter on Yanmar 350 turbo

Has anyone tried to access the air filter on the Yanmar 350 turbo in a CB 32+2? It looks like a foam headband tucked in what looks to be an inaccessible spot on the forward end of the engine. I can't figure out how to gain reasonable access from either the engine compartment or from inside the cabin of my boat.

Sounds like you do not have an access panel behind the dinette backrest? I've seen the 35CB with and without it. Easy enough to install one, just don't cut through any vital organs --- Albin crammed 10 pounds of "stuff" in that 5 pound bag!

I will check, but I don't think I have that access panel. There is only fabric behind that seat.

No access panel behind the seat back. There is a small hatch between the seat back and the window to the cockpit. Inside is a double-thick insulation, and below that is a plywood board held on by two screws. The board gives access to a bunch of wiring and NMEA connectors, but not to the turbo or air cleaner beneath all that.
I may consider cutting a panel in the seat back; how does yours attach and stay in place?

Those were not my boats, just boats that I inspected. Any gasketed access panel or hatch will do. Not that it needs to be weather proof but a locking gasketed hatch will be beneficial with noise and such. And find one that removes when open as opposed to one that is hinged. A hinged one will be annoying and in the way when open.

Yup, but I would do some searching for one that removes fully, rather than the hinges.

Thomas, the filter can be replaced without that new hatch, but the hatch would help with that as well as the turbo wash. You can get your hands on it from the inside seat bottom hatch providing access to the v-drive.

Be prepared for a very oily filter since the Yanmar's crank case ventilation (CCV) spits out right above the filter.

You got that right about the oily filter. The technician reached into the engine and came back with an arm black as soot to pull that thing off by feel. That’s why I was thinking about accessing from the other side.
