Turboboost light came on.....

Post by Mike Monte »

Hello all,
I own a 2001 TE28 with a Yanmar 300hp turbo engine (1014 hours).
Yesterday I started the engine after a seaside music festival and after running at trolling speed I noticed that the "turbo boost" light was on.....
I immediately stopped the engine, cleaned the raw water intake strainer (just a few strands of sea grass, etc.).
I started it up again and made my way back to port...while on the way, the light slowly dimmed and eventually went out....
When I got up to 3200 RPM (my usual cruising speed) there didn't seem to be much (if any) loss of power... (I have a few guests ans a full tank of fuel) thus it was hard to tell....
I called Standish and Ken told me that maybe the sensor was at fault.....?

Any "real life" experience with the above?

Well you clearly were not in an "over-boost" situation as you were running at trolling speed.. Follow Ken's lead but it's a boost "switch", not a sensor nor a sender.

A buddy of mine and I checked it out today...way easier than diagnosing an issue with wife and guests aboard.
I took the boat for a ride...nothing unusual...when we got back to the dock we looked at the engine.
There was a small saltwater leak from a hose on the starboard side of the engine. The water must have been leaking for some time as it corroded the wire leading to a sensor on the engine. I tried to tighten the hose clamp but it seems that the clamp had failed - thus the leak.
Applied a new hose clamp - leak fixed.
We reconnected the sensor.
All set.
...an inexpensive fix.......phew!!!

How did you get hold of Ken?
I tried several times, nobody would return my call or give me the time of the day.
