Albin 28 Peninsular 6.5 with high oil viscosity

Post by SoggySoldier »

All, new the the Group. Looking at a 94 Albin 28 with a Peninsular 6.5 with 1500 hours. Oil analysis was done and all markers came back good came back except the oil viscosity. It was high at 21.3 cSt at 100 degrees C which was according to the report, severely high. Anyone with this engine ever have the same issue? Again all other areas measured were within normal limits.

Could the prior owner have been using an additive?

Is it possible that the sample request had the wrong info on it?
Could someone have written 10-30 when they meant to write 10-40?
I would double check that

I can’t comment on oil viscosity issues other than to say I’ve never heard of an engine having an effect on it. Seems to me the numbers reported were wrong as Jay mentions.
We had a 1997 28 TE with “The Beast” and I loved that engine. Great power, decent economy and no issues that I’d attribute to the engine itself. I’d buy another in a heartbeat.

Best of luck to you!

Even with the wrong input info, my experience has been that the viscosity is one of the most basic tests that these labs complete. Usually, the main concern is oil that has been thinned by fuel.

I really like Rob's suggestion.

There is a possibility that an "oil additive" was used (with or without the owners knowledge...), consult with owner is absolutely warranted. If its a deal breaker, suggest an oil and filter change with manufacturer recommended components, run it a couple hours and resend a sample. Not at all unheard of.

I would send another sample and compare results.
I was just thinking that if the submitter or the data entry person typed in for example 10-30 and the oil was really 15-40 the result would be high viscosity.
The older I get ( ok rob please leave this alone lol) the more I believe human mistakes make for a lot of unecesssy churn.
I've been wrong before but I would do another sample before I went nuts
