A/C replacement question

Post by DCatSea »

Does anyone have experience with Mermaid aircon units? I have to replace our aged 5000btu unit, and have found a 5200btu unit from Mermaid Manufacturing in Florida, that seems to be just the thing - small footprint, low power use (110v), can run off a Honda 1000w genset, and doesn't cost the earth. Also has a 5 year guarantee and is made in the USA by a Veteran-Owned SB.

I'll be doing the install, so any advice on the quality of Mermaid units, or installation would be welcome

Doug, Mermaid units have a very good rep in Florida, and they get a workout there. Most replacement parts are available from W.W. Grainger, so they're cheap compared to most "marine" parts suppliers. I had two on my 44' trawler about 10 yrs ago and never had any issues with them. I owned that trawler for 5 years in FL. Ben

I installed a Mermaid on my 34' sailboat and had zero problems with it for the 4 or 5 years I owned the boat before I sold it. I don't recall the guy I sold it to ever having problems with it either

Install an oversized raw water filter and you'll have fewer problems with restricted water flow, which is about the only thing that ever shuts it down

Thanks for the inputs; very useful. Nice to know these units are a good bet. Don, luckily my PO fitted a large RWF in the existing AC line.

If the current weather continues I may consider putting a turtle stove in.
