Friendly Heat Exchanger Reminder

Post by tdsull »

I had planned in the next year or so to pull the heat exchanger and give it a good cleaning, but I wasn't too worried about it.
My engine doesn't run hot and I do an okay job of fresh water flushing. I am glad I pulled it this weekend.

Nice! What did you use to clean it?

4 to 1 water and muriatic acid. Rinsed well water and then blew it out with my air compressor

I also use muriatic acid with a good water rinse.
It also works on the prop to dissolve the barnacle remnants.

How long do you leave the acid in the system? That looks very nice. I have a quart left over from my sheet metal days. Used it for soldering galvanized tin.

I'm sure everyone knows this already from high school chem class, but just a reminder: When diluting acid of any kind much stronger than vinegar ALWAYS add the acid to water, not water to acid.

I let it soak for about 2 hours give or take, I think it had stopped bubbling at that point.
I used a concrete mixing tub so it was only half submerged, I rolled it over once or twice as I cleaned the shed.
After it was fully rinsed and dry I used some steel wool and SOS to clean up the ends to get it ready for new gaskets.
