Did this symptom develop over time or suddenly? Also, do you know what the make/model of the transmission is?

Just rebuilt our Borg-Warner transmission (1983, 36', 120HP) this year - clutch and bearings were well worn. Possibly something along these lines? I guess it would be prudent to ask if the sound is coming from the transmission casing? or some place else?

A bad bearing would be more likely to "rumble" (vibrate) than make a whine at the low rpm the tranny is rotating.

the first thing I would do is make sure the shift lever on the trans. is going all the way into gear, disconnecting the shift cable and manually shifting the trans. would be a good way to do that. To know if the whine is coming from the trans. I would put the tip of a large screwdriver against the case of the trans. and the handle against my ear put it in reverse, the origin of the noise will be apparent. If the shift lever is going all the way into the reveres position and the shaft does not rotate, but will rotate in forward the transmission must be removed for disassembly and inspection. I have a 1983 36 with a 120 Lehman and the borg warner velvet drive. The prevois owners records show a Trans. rebuild at about 3500 hours so I assume that problems with them are common.

BTW, in my previous post I assumed that the fluid has been checked and is at the proper level, that is the first thing to do.

Not familiar with your trans but my working years were spent as a transmission specialist in the auto industry .I believe your trans has a gear driven pump to make the hydraulic pressure to engage both the forward and reverse clutch, in a car the pressure the pump puts out in reverse is double what is required for forward due to the effort it takes to pull the weight verses pushing it in simple terms. If your trans has a filter it could be as simple as a fluid and filter change . Generally there is a bypass pressure relief valve for the pump and this can create the whine or buss that you hear.See if your trans has a model tag on it and you can probably find an exploded view on line to see the pump and filter location. Hope this helps

The transmission on my Atomic 4 had an adjustable band for reverse. Reverse would slip if maladjusted. I know they put that same transmission behind some diesels.
