Since I posted on this thread, I’ve had to replace my tank. Yep you guessed it - the tank split but it did have about 2” of corrosion on the underside. I replaced it with a new stainless tank that was about £300. Slightly smaller by about 1/2 a gallon but it now heats up on the shortest of trips, even in the winter. The old tank must have had so much lime scale in it - it’s what was probably holding it together!
