i would guess my '93 TE would have a pretty low hull number.

I would imagine that you would be pretty low. In the year I looked for a 28 I never found one older than 1992. It was a stern drive boat on a trailer.

I think since 1972 ish, the Coast Guard has required US boat manufactures to place a hull number on their boats.

Mine is AUL28457E999 I'm not sure what all the codes mean, but AUL is the letters assigned to Albin by the Coast Guard ..... 28 is the length......457 is the number of my hull...( I'm #357 made see below post ) Dunno what the E9 stands for but the last 99 is the year it was made.

457 = 357th hull (Albin starts with 101, makes it seem like they build more)
E9 = Hull laid May 99 (Jan - A, Feb - B, etc.)
99 = Model year

The number molded into the transom on your boat is the HIN (Hull Identification Number). It is usually also molded into the boat somewhere else as well, but no guarantees.

Hi:

I know with our center consoles (new last year) we started production with hull # 101.

Not sure why this is or if it, necessarily, applies to the 28', but it would certainly answer the question as to why there is 100 unaccounted for hulls. And, no, the first 100 made it out of the factory just fine.

I had 35-101 and 31-102 in my dealership. They were the first and second boats produced.

The Coast Guard does not require that hull numbers begin with 1, or that they be sequential . Only that they be unique.

It is common practice in manufacturing for serial numbers to start with 101, or even 1001. It is not an attempt to make it look like they produce more of the item, but rather a method of ensuring that computers are able to record the full number accurately. Many computer systems will automatically drop the leading zeros in a number such as 001. They will simply make it 1. If one wants to ensure that the number of digits remains the same, and the zeros appear, you start counting at 101 or 1001, depending on how long you expect the series to continue.

Most boat manufacturers follow this method in assigning hull numbers.

it was originally powered by a 230 hp marine power diesel. i could never get more than 3000 rpm out of it. seems to me the surveyor should have caught that, but he didn't. have a 310 hp peninsular in it now.

I have a 1971 Albin 25 that was originally a motor sailor. The compression post was still in the boat. I am trying to locate the hull number on the boat. Where in a 1971 would a hull number be located. The later boats have them externally on the transom but I do not see anything on mine.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hull number is on a brass/bronze plate to the left of the steering wheel. At least that is where it is on our 1971 model "Iron Jack"

Your 1971 does not have a hull identification number, unless somebody etched one on. Boat number at the steering wheel is the sequential manufacture number.
The state of Washington issued me a title based on the previous registration and the signed over title from the previous owner. Just this year, they sent us notice that the HIN on the title was not official so they issued us a new one, which we dutifully engraved on the port transom just before painting. Strange, but we'll take it.
