How to pull prop 28 TE

Post by gfuller »

Hello,

I've recently found myself in the position where I need to pull the prop.... I've popped the nuts off and hit the prop/shaft with PB blaster but can't seem to break it loose with a hammer. Is there any special technique to this? I've looked at pullers (c-clamp type) but I cannot find one that will accommodate a 1.5" shaft. Can this be down without rudder removal?

Thanks!

You need a prop puller. If there is a propeller shop nearby they will often allow you to borrow one especially if you are bringing in the prop for reconditioning. You back the bolts off but do not remove them because when the prop breaks loose it will fly off.

Thanks Russ,

Unfortunately, I don't have any prop shops local and the prop is well... beyond repair so I don't mind taking a sledgehammer to it. I'm wondering if MAP gas or something will help persuade it? I can probably borrow a puller from a friend that works at a boatyard nearby... maybe.

Don't forget that when you hammer on the back of the prop that force is being transmitted back to the coupling and transmission. I think you can heat the prop with a torch but I would definitely get a puller if you can. You do not have to remove the rudder.

There is not room to use a regular automotive puller as I tried. If you don't have access to a prop puller you can make one out of a steel plate and all thread. Flat plate behind with notch out of it to slide over shaft from motor. Then flat plate against the nut to support.

Mike, do you have a pic of the puller you made? How thick was the steel? 1/4"?

We (several neighboring owners) bought a prop puller at a second hand marine store and its now community property among our group. Try e-bay........Tom.

1/2" thick it takes a bunch of pressure.
