ZF63A filter

Post by fairtide »

Any advice on purchasing a transmission filter for the AF 63A? The manual calls for fluid and filter change after the first 25 hours.

ZF 220A Oil

I used the data on the attached ZF site for the 220A tranny. You can download the PDF file or I can send it to you by email if I had your address. I also talked to a local ZF distributor. I could be wrong, but don't think so. Let us know what you find out.

motor oil for the tranny

Post by fairtide »

I was able to look thru the pdf and found what you stated. The ZF63A transmission could not be found, so I will stick to the ATF requirement in the owner's manual. I was able to find a genuine ZF filter on the MER equipment site and it was about $40 cheaper than at a local outlet even with shipping etc. added in. There was a non-genuine filter that was cheaper by a bit, and it's probably just as good as the real McCoy, but I did not order it, as tempting as it was.
I am heeding the advice that I got on this owners' group site about not being pennywise about maintaining expensive equipment, so the tranny oil and filter will be changed pretty close to that first 25 hours of operation that is called for.
Thanks for the reply.--Fair Tide

Be safe, be smart & protect your warranty. Contact your closest ZF Marine distribution center or authorized ZF repair facility and order the filter directly from them and follow their advice on fluids. Be prepared to give them your tranny Model and Serial #'s. Hopefully you have your original manuals / all the maintenance procedures are within the covers.

Remember there is nothing wrong with hiring a qualified marine mechanic the 1st time around and observing the service. Most are happy to have you there seeing and touching your boat / it makes you a better captain. Alot of these guys are busy enough with the big stuff and are happy to have a skipper learn and perform the basic maintenance on their own.

Tom,
What lubricant should be used with a ZF 63A tranny?
Also do you carry trolling valves?
Thanks,
Terry

The above inquiry was with local ZF supplier, which confirms you have it right for the ZF 63A tranny.

This posting reminded me that my transmission is due for servicing.
I could not track down a Hurth parts supplier in Canada but was directed to a ZF Marine Dealer in the USA (contact J. Torrey 401 463 3005) who advised me that the filter element kit for the Hurth ZF63A transmission was part number 3312199031 and was priced at US$53.60. They have them in stock and are shipping to me.

good price on that filter

Post by fairtide »

John Murray may have hit the jackpot price in his favor with $53.60 for a tranny filter for the ZF63A. I will give a call and get an extra unless someone else finds a better deal out there.

I am not sure this is the one for your transmission but it is a ZF filter for $43 plus shipping.

My local Hurth/ZF dealer informed me that this is a washable and re-useable filter. If you have 2 or 3 of them, they should last you for quite a while.
