We just had some starter trouble, and I wanted to share some info so you all know what I know now!
Ours is an 97' 28 te. We brought the non original starter in for a rebuild, after installation we turned it over and heard a grinding noise.
Pulled it back out to find the face of the clutch behind the drive gear all dinged up from hitting the bolts on the damper plate.
I measured the throw and clearances to find it 1/4" to far a throw.
In talking to peninsular, Mitch said the company who made that starter was sold, new company dosnt produce the odd clutch because its a very unusual application. So be careful rebuilding!!! I now own a rebuilt starter that is useless. So then we bought a new gear reduction starter from peninsular and it works beautifully, it even sounds better on the start.
Best wishes,
Neil

Re: New starter info
Neil, Your still lucky because I just had mine repaired, the brushes and ground plate replaced, becauseon mine the gear reduction starter did not fit,too close to the exhaust crossover so I had to attempt to repair mine which luckily went well,,
