Snakes on a boat
I saw this in a Youtube video. I am guessing this is the keep the seagulls off the deck. Does anyone know if this works? Would hawks be tempted to fly off with them? It seems it would be easy to store and distribute on the deck when needed.

Re: Snakes on a boat
Suddenly we have had an unbelievable number of swallows nesting under our club deck over the water and at night they loved to perch on my safety lines. I started using large rubber snakes last year to keep them off. I got the idea from someone who had successfully used large rubber snakes for seagulls. Some boaters at my marina are using twirly rigs. Just as in your posted photo .. the larger the snakes the better.

Re: Snakes on a boat
So, Pitou, do they work? Seagulls and swallows are the bane of the boat here on Hood Canal. How many, How big?
We string a rope from stem to stern and hang tape off of it. The reflective tape worked better, but after a while the swallows just hang out on the rails, pooping their lives away.

Re: Snakes on a boat
Yes they work!
They worked for my buddy with the gulls and for me with the swallows. Buy the BIGGEST ones that you can find no matter how silly they may look. I first ordered 14" ones from Amazon and they were so small they looked like rubber worms from the fishing department of a sporting goods store. I ended up finding three LARGE rubber snakes (close to 3 ft. each) in the toy department of Walmart. I placed one on the trunk, one on the bow and one on the rooftop. No more droppings!

Seagulls? Check.
Swallows? Check.
Now you got me worried that we might attract the bald eagles that inhabit our shoreline. How bad is their poop?

I mounted one of these on the dock post next to boat. Bird-X Prowler Owl Decoy
Swallows stay away but it needs wind to be most effective.

Re: Snakes on a boat
That's a great idea to keep the birds away. I wonder how long it will take until they realize the snake isn't real?

This is when one hopes that the term "Bird brain" is rooted in truth!

Re: Snakes on a boat
I wonder if a realistic looking 'sleeping cat' lawn ornement might also work?
