Shakedown x2

Post by Jeremyvmd »

So me and sue spent the weekend at the marina on shady as we had some projects to work on (mostly replacing a fuel tank on purrrspective) and wanted to shake both boats down. First off I made a fitted pad (2" memory foam) and sheet for the v-berth, I don't think I've ever slept so well. Even our super comfy bed at home felt like junk after that nights sleep. I'm a huge insomniac and never sleep through the night. Well passed out at 1230 and woke up at 830...can't tell you how happy that made me.

As for the shakedowns
Purrrspective runs better than she ever did. The marina found a few hp she had been missing in that etec 150. Cruised at 25knts at 4200rpm (her old top speed) despite a 20knt headwind, and topped out at 30! Can't wait to try her on a nice day when I can play with the trim.

The shady lady - refrigerator is dead :'(. Might have someone look at it to see if it's worth fixing. Not sure I NEED it as it's really tiny. Might do something else with the space (storage!?) and move up my plan to covert the rear compartment to a freezer/fridge. As for the engine...my god she ran well. After the slight scare with the black smoke of death, took her out and without realizing it she was on plane doin 17knts. Couldnt get the grin off my face. Did not try topping her out as the conditions were horrid and it was only the first shakedown. But cruised around at 16-17knts when before she was happier at 13-14. Coulda gone quicker but again conditions and first shakedown.

On a scale of 1-10 of happiness with the shakedowns
Purrrspective 9.8
Shady 9.5 (lost some points on the fridge!)

If you convert a transom compartment to a fridge, where are you gonna put all the stuff that's stored in there? lol!

Very happy to hear how well she's running!

Empty space on a boat? That's a stronger force than gravity! Will pull in all kinds of stuff!!

lol it's been left empty intentionally. That way I know if I can live without that storage and therefore it's ok to make it into refrigeration

Actually I have my eye on the 35te of a 32+2...lol.
Next boat will likely be a sailboat tho. And keep the 28 for fishing.

Glad the hear you're back in business....sounds like you're in the ballpark of where you wanted to be. Great news. I fired my rig up today for the first time...she sputtered a bit....puffed a bit of smoke from the un-burnt fuel I shoved down her throat after sitting for 5 months or so....and then purred like a kitten.

I too....am a 35TE fan.....I'd like to get down to 2 boats someday SOON.

So I went to start my Penninsular after winter storage and it wouldn't start, the red voltage indicator light which has never come on ,was on, it must not have been getting charged over the winter when I would turn on the charger once a month.
Is it possible that battery selector switch in off position would prevent charging?

Depends on how your charger is wired. Mine is wired directly to the batteries donno it won't affect it. If someone wired them through the switch it's possible, but very unlikely. How old are your batteries? What kind are they (size)?

Update.
I pulled both starting group 27 batteries which are less than a year old and one tested bad, so it was replaced under warranty, I have re installed them and left the charger on overnight and hopefully it will fire right up tomorrow, I assume if one battery is faulty it could probably draw down the whole bank,

Still won't crank over quickly even with one new group 27 starting battery, second one year old group 27, and the 8d deep cycle, so all together lots of amps in the "all" switch position,
I'm thinking it's the starter at this point. Penninsular has made an upgraded version so I'll order one of those asap if they have them in stock or I'll have the old rebuilt..

Are you certain that the 8D is charged? It could easily draw down your group 27s if not. Good luck with eradicating those winter gremlins!
