28TE Transom Lettering Size

Post by Jaredh »

We just received our COD for our new-to-us Albin 28, and need to get her new name and home port on the transom prior to bringing her home in ~10 days. Her new name is ISLA. The challenge I have run into is letter sizing for the name and home port. Without having the boat handy to measure this is a tough call.

Could anyone recommend letter sizing for the transom of an albin 28, or post a picture of their boat's name and let me know the letter sizing so we can have a sense of what we are looking at?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jared

There is ample space for the name and home port. Check to see if your state has a certain requirement for the hailing (or home) port, like 3 inches. The name on my transom is 8 1/2 inches high and the home port is 3 1/2 inches high. The pro who created my lettering came over to see the boat and sized the name accordingly. Your name has only 4 letters so it can probably be higher than mine with more space between the letters. Ask to see a layout before you finalize. I didn't measure the length of my boat name but the boat is about 9 feet wide at the stern. I've tried to attach a photo of my boat but the file is too large. Sorry.
Good luck with your new boat. You will love it.

I'll get my lettering size tomorrow for you. But we used boatletteringtoyou.com and are thrilled with it.

Remember that COD requirement letter height is a minimum of 4 inches tall per letter for both Name and Hailing Port. I had Standish remove the old name and prep for my arrival and I installed the new vinyl letting.

Here's a picture from my 28TE. Name is 8 inch, Hailing Port is 4 inch, Name Font is Algerian:

The BoatUS web site has a nice system for designing font, color, size, etc. for vinyl boat lettering. Here's the link http://www.boatus.com/boatgraphics/lettering.asp

Thank you for all the input!

We used the boatus online system to order the name for the transom and bow sides, and the hailing port.

We ended up going 6" for the name, and 4" (min required) for port and bow names. Although I wish I had seen Pitou's post before ordering, it looks like 8" could be a better fit. I suppose it can always be updated in the future.

You'll be fine and can always switch it up. With the bow name, I'm guessing that you got the fisheries endorsement? Fish'em up!

Here's my bow lettering, again on the 28, at 4 inches.

Looks great!

We got coastwise and fisheries endorsements. I don't plan on chartering anytime soon but did switch from a rec tuna permit to a general category for this season. Just ordered a bunch of goodies from Liferaft Services yesterday, prepping for our USCG dockside exam with a sticker for 50+ miles.

Lot of hoops to jump through but we are almost there. Taking the drill instructor course tomorrow, have the fcc license, and still need first aid and cpr. I had better catch a couple tuna this summer!

Guess we can live with the 6" name and 4" homeport. Here is a shot of her up in Maine after our ride from Standish Boat Yard yesterday.

I did mine with the lettering centered between the port side door and the starboard side of the transom. My brain is very symmetrical and I couldn't get used to centering it across the entire back of the transom like many do. To each their own I guess...
