Hello fellow boat owners, got a dumb question, how do you get the oil filters off, this is my first diesel engine all others were gas which I used a standard auto oil filter remover, the one I have is too small to fit around the oil filter.
Second question maybe not so dumb, there is a manual pump to pump the oil out in a fairly good size tube down to pan . pumped out a little in a plasic bottle seemed to come out pretty good even though engine was cold. When I do change it I will make sure the 26 quarts( yes 6.5 gals) gets warm enough. Has anyone changed the oil this way?
Third question; What is the best way to get the 26 qts warm other than take it out for a ride, don't want the oil too hot. Will it get warm in the slip enough to change the oil.

Although my Cummins has only 15 quarts it was easy to pump it out with the hand pump similar the one you have. I ran the boat out of the marina to bring it up to operating temperature and pumped the oil into plastic oil and antifreeze bottles saved for the purpose. The oil is not hot enough to melt them. You can purchase an oil filter wrench with a strap that adjusts to any size filter. I guess you know to fill the new filter with oil unless it is mounted upside down or sideways.

Run the engine in the slip for ten or 15 minutes. This should be enough to get it warm, but not too hot. This will improve the flow, but more importantly, it will stir up any particulate that might be in it. Since, unlike a car, the oil does not drain out the bottom of the pan, the only way particulate is removed is through the filter, or when it's pumped out while floating in the oil. If you change your filter often enough, and don't overtighten it, you should be able to turn it by hand, though I have to admit, I've had trouble before. A normal strap wrench will usually do the job. And yes, if it's a vertical filter, you generally want to fill it with oil. Again, unlike a car, these engines are large and so are the filters. You don't want it running dry for a good minute or two while the filter fills with oil.
Along with an oil change, you should check ALL engine zincs. Our 3126 has numerous (I think I counted 11), though none have needed replacement yet. On our white engine, they were all marked with a dot of red paint. If yours aren't, I suggest doing it.
