Hella Marine Masthead Light

Post by kowal_53 »

I can't believe I have to post this. My light bulbs have burned out, so I removed the screws, and fought the back plastic top. It came off have much manipulation. Then I tried to remove the clear plastic bulb cover, but I gave up on round one. I am concerned that I will break it.

I tied to get a manual, no luck so far. Send Hella Marine a message for a manual. Seems that there is not an LED replacement at Hella Marine or Perko quite yet. Apparently the certification for approved lights takes a while.

I have LED's in mine but obviously don't fall under the same regulations as you do. I will say however, it is much brighter than when it had halogens in. I will eventually get rid of it because as lights go, it's rubbish and is prone to corrosion and leaking. I'll simply put a standard anchorlight and spur the negative cable to a stand alone forward running light so that the switch on the dash works the same.

I finally talked to Hella Marine support. (Hard to find phone number for Hella Marine 770-631-7500) The black portion was not supposed to come off. It is glued. However these lights can age such that they are hard to get a part. Given that I could not find an LED version of this light, I decided to get a replacement. As it turned out APEX has these lights on sale for $15.00. I guess once they are gone Apex will not get more of them. Hella Marine support seemed to think they will be made for a while. However it is hard to find someone that has them for sale.

The Perko is similar but they are $60.00. Eventually we should see an LED model we could use. The only one I found was an Atwood. ($99.00) It was taller, folded down and had the wrong mount type. I called to see if they could sell me the mount they offer on their bulb version. They were not sure if it could be used. The bulb unit can be purchase with both on the one you want. Since I would have had to cut the mounting shaft on the LED model and figure out how to attach it to my old mount. I deemed this to risky.

Light was installed, without issues. However Apex did have issues with their part number. The APEX number online was for unwrapped units. Initially they said they were not available. Called Hella Marine and they were. After a call to APEX the issue was solved, and the lights arrived.
