Why we're never bored

Post by Jay Knoll »

I was cleaning up my desk this afternoon and came across a "TO DO" list for Better Days from last year. FWTW we recognize boating years as starting in September and running thru the following May/June. Thus the projects are accomplished when it cools off and before we take our longer spring cruise. Anyway, here is what I did "last year"

Paint Decks
Refinish bow anchor platform
Repair window openers
Refinish Main Hatch
Refinish interior cockpit wood
Refinish exterior wood
Install Trim in Main Cabin and Head
Build/Install light in galley
Install USB outlets in main and aft cabin
Install 120 volt outlet in main cabin
Build locker/bookshelves for Main cabin starboard side
Install new coverboards below forward windows
change out 3 way valve
redo sun screens
Install stanchions on aft end of cockpit
Install door latches in galley/hanging locker

Haven't started working on "this year's list yet!

Nice. The labor of love. Sure beats yard work!

BTW, does your boat have an engine?
If so either she's feeling very neglected or there's another list floating around that's for the mechanicals..

I keep telling folks who ask about retirement & keeping busy, that's easy just buy an old classic boat, that'll keep you busy (and broke). Our boating season here in Arizona is about the same as yours. Except when the desert summers heat up to 110 plus we hitch up the boat trailer and head for the cooler Pacific coast, either San Diego, or our favorite cruising, the San Juan Islands in Washington and the Gulf Islands in BC. This past summer was the most awesome adventure we've ever done.

HI Rob,

Yes it does! I didn't put the maintenance/repair items on that list because those were just "improvements" Aside from the normal filter/oil/impeller changes I also had to replace the oil change pump, install a new depth sounder and an in the hull transducer and replace a leaking oil hose. In the process I've discovered that I don't have an engine alarm system on the boat so that is at the top of this fall's list. Somewhere in there we spent 6 weeks cruising up to Jekyll Island GA and back to our home port.

Sounds good and she appears to be well attended to and well used....That's the best combination for sure.

I did a real sweet alarm system on my twin Cummins, fun project. I have an article posted on Boatdiesel in the Articles section, not sure if you're a member or not? But Tony Athens also put a bunch of my narrative and photos on the Seaboard website, here's the link.

I've been looking for that alarm digest. Part of my winter rebuild project now. Thank you, Rob.
