30 amp showpower inlet

Post by Legacy »

One of my 30 amp shore power inlets cooked one of the three prongs on the shore power cable and on the inlet. Still works fine becasue I only discovered it unscrewing the cable preparing for departure. But I want to fix the cause asap. I don't believe it was wet or that any seawater was on the cable. Thoughts on the cause? I was going to replace the inlet, maybe it was loose or had some hidden corrosion, check all the connections, the ground etc. Thoughts welcome.

Well the first thing I can think of is corrosion on that particular prong. The corrosion would increase the resistance on the connection and cause it to heat up which in turn causes the resistance to get higher.. and so the cycle goes until it opens up, melts ect....

Corrosion on the blade or the corresponding slot is usually to blame. Owning a marina, you'd be surprised how many people come and blame the management for "power spikes" or "reverse polarity" when the cause is clearly their corroded shorepower plug.

I have found that water collects above the plug, I have taken it out and always there is water there. not sure where the water comes from but it is not good to have the wires sitting in water.
