How to repair stuffing box

I have a 1988 36 albin and would like some info on checking the box. I do have a small
hose attached to the stuffing box.. What is the small hose for?

Does you have packing or do you have a drip less shaft seal?

I too have a 36 with a small hose that goes from the stuffing box (packing) that attaches to just after the exhaust elbow. Can someone tell me exactly how and why that is there and for what purpose? There is no anti-siphon valve, should there be? Thanks.

PS I use the 'goretex' type of packing, four or five wraps, and after doing the loop (5,000+ miles) it worked perfectly, no drips, no problems.

I think (think) the packing systems with the hose coming off of them is a "dripless" system - and believe the small hose is to inject a little water (typically in High RPM systems) for extra lubrication. I am not sure here though. My 36 has a "Drip Full" packing assembly.
Do you have any images - or any identification numbers/letters/symbols off the stuffing box?

WATER INJECTION HOSE

Most DSS units have a small barb fitting on the graphite flange where a hose can be connected to ensure that water is always present right up to the rotor. From the fitting, the hose runs either to a place high above the waterline, or, in the case of higher speed vessels, into the engine’s raw-water cooling system. (The instructions for the PSS Shaft Seal, for instance, make a distinction between boats that run above and below 12 knots.)

In most of these installations, the water injection hose runs unsupported from the flange to a nearby stringer, floor, or bulkhead, where it is attached. It is important to use underwater-rated hose, which is quite durable but also flexible.
